In Memory of Amy Estes McCullough
The Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (VAELA) mourns the loss of one of our most beloved colleagues, Amy Estes McCullough, who passed away earlier this month after a courageous battle with cancer. Amy served as President of VAELA in 2024-2025 and was honored by VAELA as Member of the Year, an honor that only begins to reflect the esteem in which her colleagues hold her.
Admired and respected by her peers and the public, her commitment to her clients, particularly vulnerable adults and children, was evident in everything she did. To know Amy was to witness the rare combination of a brilliant legal mind, a deep sense of justice and compassion for those she served. She was a tireless advocate for the many vulnerable adults and children across the Commonwealth of Virginia. By mentoring lawyers, newer to the profession, she demonstrated her professionalism, integrity and commitment to the practice of law - a legacy of service with grace and compassion . Her colleagues will remember Amy for her warmth, bright smile, and unshakable commitment to doing what was right for those she served.
Over and above her legal career, she gave generously of her time by serving on the boards of the Washington Heritage Museums, the Community Foundation, Fredericksburg Christian School, and the Service League.
She is survived by her husband, Steve McCollough, her sons Andrew and William, her parents and brother to whom we extend our deepest condolences.
The VAELA community has lost an extraordinary colleague and friend. Amy's dedication to elder law, her warmth, and her integrity will continue to inspire all of us. She will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family has shared that donations may be made to the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region or to the Washington Heritage Museums.
