In Memory of Amy Estes McCullough

The Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys mourns the loss of one of our most beloved members, Amy Estes McCullough, who passed away last month after a courageous battle with cancer.

Amy was a dedicated and deeply respected elder law attorney whose commitment to her clients, particularly vulnerable adults and children, was evident in everything she did. She served as President of VAELA in 2024-2025 and has been honored by VAELA as Member of the Year, recognition that only begins to reflect the esteem in which her colleagues held her.

To know Amy was to witness the rare combination of brilliant legal mind, humility, and boundless compassion. Whether advocating for an incapacitated adult, protecting the interests of an injured child, or mentoring those newer to the profession, she brought the same grace, patience, and kindness to every interaction. Her colleagues remember her warmth, her bright smile, and her unshakable commitment to doing what was right for those she served.

Amy earned her B.A. with honors from the University of Virginia and her law degree from Washington & Lee School of Law. Beyond her legal career, she gave generously of her time to her community, serving on the boards of the Washington Heritage Museums, the Community Foundation, Fredericksburg Christian School, and the Service League.

She is survived by her husband, Steve, her sons Andrew and William, and her parents and brother.

The VAELA community has lost an extraordinary colleague and friend. Amy's dedication to elder law, her warmth, and her integrity will continue to inspire all of us. She will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family has shared that donations may be made to the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region or to the Washington Heritage Museums.
